The publication, in one paragraph
Black Box Notes is a critical-analytical publication on AI opacity, interpretability, auditability, and the institutional question of whether modern AI systems can be trusted by the people who depend on them. We publish a cornerstone essay each issue, a regular Field Reports column on practitioner-grade audit walk-throughs, a Regulation Watch beat on EU/UK/Singapore/U.S. policy implementation, and a Conversations interview series. The publication is operated by Lumenwhite Media Holdings Pte Ltd, a portfolio entity of Web4Guru. Editorial control rests with the named bylines.
Official taglines
- Primary. "On opacity, auditability, and the limits of trust in modern AI systems."
- Short. "Critical writing on AI opacity."
- Long. "A critical-analytical publication on AI opacity, interpretability, auditability, and the institutional question of whether modern AI systems can be trusted by the people who depend on them."
Naming conventions
- Full name on first reference: Black Box Notes.
- Short reference: the publication. We avoid the abbreviation "BBN".
- Title-case for the publication name, including in headlines. Italicise as a published title.

Brand colour palette
We do not use brand colours as a visual signature; we use restraint. The palette below appears across the site only where it serves the reader.
| Role | Hex | Where it appears |
|---|---|---|
| Paper | #fbfbfa | Page background |
| Paper, secondary | #f4f4f1 | Callouts, footer plate, newsletter strip |
| Rule | #c9c8c1 | Dividers, table rules, card borders |
| Body text | #272622 | EB Garamond body text |
| Headlines | #0a0a0c | Inter headlines, masthead bar |
| Slate-iron (accent) | #1f3a4a | Kickers, links, reading-progress bar |
| Flag | #9a1d1d | Reserved exclusively for .callout.flag borders |
The flag colour (#9a1d1d) is the only red on the publication. It is reserved for the critical-frame callout — a piece of typography we use when we want to mark a claim as contested. Use it elsewhere and the convention dies. Please do not.
Typography
- Body. EB Garamond, weight 400/500, optical 16–17pt.
- Headlines. Inter, weight 600, tracking -0.015em.
- Kickers, datelines, small-caps. JetBrains Mono, weight 500, letter-spacing 0.14em, uppercase.
- Drop caps. EB Garamond, weight 700, ~3.6rem, sparingly.
Logo & wordmark
The wordmark is the publication's title in EB Garamond italic. There is no figurative logomark. The wordmark exists in two lockups:
- Primary. "Black Box Notes" set in EB Garamond italic, with the publication subtitle in regular EB Garamond italic two lines below.
- Compact. "Black Box Notes" only, used in mastheads where the subtitle would not survive scaling.
Logo assets are available as downloadable SVGs from /brand/wordmark-primary.svg and /brand/wordmark-compact.svg. The favicon source is at /favicon.svg.
Use of our brand
Editorial reuse. The publication name, taglines, and wordmark may be used in editorial coverage of Black Box Notes without prior permission. We ask that you link the wordmark to blackboxnotes.com and credit the publication by name.
Co-marketing. We do not co-brand with vendors, hardware companies, cloud providers, model providers, or any entity whose products we cover. We do not accept event sponsorships. We do not accept conference-stage placements in exchange for a brand placement. This rule is unconditional and is not negotiable.
Excerpting. Up to 300 words of a Black Box Notes piece may be excerpted in commentary or criticism with attribution, a link to the original, and the publication name. Longer excerpts require correspondence; see Contact.
Republication. We do not syndicate pieces, but we have a standing republication arrangement for pieces marked "Open republication" in the footer of the piece. To date, no piece carries this mark. When one does, the terms will appear on it.

Quotable lines
For headline writers and event copy. These are lines from the publication's editor's notes that we are happy to see in cite-context:
"A publication that writes about opacity should be obvious about its own."
"Calling such a system 'a black box' without specifying to whom is the move that has poisoned most of the discourse."
"We do not paginate; if a piece has been retired we say so on a dated retirement note."
